Sleep apnea is one of the commonest sleep disorder and affects almost 18,000,000 Americans. A sleep disorder characterized by interrupted breathing while sleeping, sleep apnea is also without doubt the most dangerous of sleep disorders as it deprives the brain of critical oxygen and can occasionally prove to be fatal.

There are two totally separate types of sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is in effect a neurological disorder where the breathing is interrupted because of signals sent from the brain. Obstructive sleep apnea by contrast is in effect a mechanical problem where the windpipe is blocked either by excessive tissue or as a result of the abnormal relaxation or collapse of muscle tissue in and around the windpipe. In either case however the results are basically identical with repeated interruptions to the breathing which deprive the brain of oxygen and place sufferers at heightened risk from such things as hypertension, heart attack and stroke.

Unluckily, diagnosing sleep apnea can prove a problem as snoring, which is one of its commonest symptoms and often leads to sleep apnea being called the snoring disease, is also seen as a symptom of various other medical conditions. Snoring is usually present with sleep apnea as the brain responds to a lack of oxygen by waking the sufferer enough to restart breathing and this often produces snoring.

This repeated awakening through the night also causes a very poor overall quality of sleep and it is not at all uncommon for sleep apnea sufferers to get up in the morning feeling even more tired than when they got into bed. This also produces a feeling of exhaustion during the course of the day and an overpowering desire to sleep.

But, tiredness arising from a poor quality of sleep is only one part of the problem and various other symptoms will also generally be present including morning headaches, forgetfulness and a difficulty in maintaining concentration.

Left untreated the mounting exhaustion resulting from sleep apnea can lead to serious psychological problems beginning with simple tetchiness and moving on to depression with obvious changes in behavior and mood.

Both central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea can be treated and, as long as the condition is diagnosed early enough, this treatment is often relatively easy. For example, a mild case of obstructive sleep apnea arising out of nasal congestion can generally be treated with nothing more than a course of decongestants. In the same way, a lot of cases of sleep apnea which are not too serious can be treated with the use of a mask which is worn while sleeping and which provides a constant pressure of air to keep the airway open. Lastly, in the most serious cases of sleep apnea surgery may be needed and can be very effective, though it may also lead to a variety of complications and needs to be considered with caution.

Possibly the most important thing to remember when treating sleep apnea is that as it carries the potentially fatal risk of respiratory failure sufferers ought not to be tempted to use sleeping pills or to use other types of sleep enhancers without first seeking the approval of their doctor.

Natural sleep remedies without question provide an effective complement to prescribed medicines and herbal remedies which are intended to improve the duration and quality of sleep may be helpful in managing the excessive daytime sleepiness often brought on by sleep apnea. Likewise, such things as chromatherapy, aromatherapy and guided relaxation and meditation can help to combat the insomnia and anxiety which accompany sleep apnea.
