Manufacturing is the process of making the goods and services as per the needs of society. In the present age a number of changes have taken place in the manufacturing world. The most prominent changes are:
1) Worldwide competition of the global products. In the earlier years, each country would protect its local manufacturers by not permitting the outside companies to operate in their region. But this is no longer possible in this global world. It is not necessary to purchase goods for your customers in your country only. In this age of fast information technology, finding manufacturers in any corner of the world, getting quotes from them, and importing goods has become very easy. Even the small manufacturers have to face competition from countries like China and India where the labor costs are very low. This has forced the local companies to become more competitive as per the demand of the times.
2) High tech manufacturing or advanced technology. If lower labor costs have been the advantage of some countries, the companies from countries like the US and Europe have reduced their manufacturing costs by automations. In most of those companies, advanced techniques like Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) are very common. The Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines have made bulk manufacturing very fast and cheap with minimum labor requirements. A single laborer can operate more than two machines at a time and produce a large number of products.
However, since the CNC machines are available to all the manufactures who can afford them, they may not be sufficient to stay competitive in the market. To develop a monopoly for certain items in the market or to have competitive edge, certain companies develop their own unique process technology and try to keep it their proprietary as long as they can. Robotics is a field of study being used extensively to perform operations that are considered very difficult to handle for humans.
3) Increased variety of materials. Material varieties have been increasing. The companies manufacturing processes should be able to smoothly introduce new materials. Further, since there is decrease in the number of direct laborers in the company, the cost of the materials has become a major part of the total product cost.
4) The overall structure of the manufacturing systems, strategies, and management of the company. In this age, everybody wants high quality products at the lowest cost and within the shortest possible amount of time. You may have received the orders and may have high-tech machines, but they are of no use unless you have efficient production management. It is vital to set all of your manufacturing systems so that your men and machines are used in an optimum manner.
Your company should have strategies at hand to meet the demands of all types of customers. Your production manager should be able to allocate various jobs to your men and machines so they are always kept busy and no time is wasted. The infrastructure in place facilitates the process of manufacturing, but it is the capable managers who understand various machines and manufacturing processes well and are masters at getting the things done and producing high quality results.
In this changing world, the faster you apply the latest technological and productive managerial changes within your production shop, the faster you reap the benefits. But many times new technology is very costly in the beginning and becomes cheaper after some time, so workout the costs. Along with adopting new technologies, training your men to utilize it is crucial.
